Links Between Iran And Durham University

EDM number 1563 in 2010-12, proposed by Robert Halfon on 09/03/2011.
Categorised under the topics of Higher education and Iran.

That this House notes that in 2008 the Iranian government was in talks with Islamic studies departments across the UK; believes that, given the Iranian regime's calls for the death of Salman Rushdie and the public hanging of homosexuals, it is not a suitable candidate to provide universities with academic direction; further notes that, for example, Durham University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iranian government's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, which included promises to publish joint books, hold joint conferences, undertake joint research and exchange students and members of staff; further notes that in return, the Iranian government paid Durham 10,000; and therefore calls on the Government to hold an urgent inquiry into financial links between British universities and despotic regimes that tyrannise their own people.
