English Anthem

EDM number 414 in 2012-13, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 16/07/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage and Sports.

That this House welcomes the Prime Minister's expression of support for an English anthem to be sung by English sporting teams and athletes when representing England, just as Scottish and Welsh teams and athletes do; notes his support for Jerusalem as the appropriate choice, which is now used by English athletes at the Commonwealth Games and also by the women's England lacrosse team; continues to support God Save the Queen as the UK's national anthem, which should continue to be used for British and UK teams and athletes, including for Team GB in the Olympics and for all state and official events; believes that England using the UK national anthem confuses England and theUK and also undermines an equal claim to a UK identity and Britishness of the other home nations, which is damaging to the UK when Scottish and Welsh people then see God Save the Queen as the England anthem rather than their UK one and have to endure it being sung by England teams both playing against them and other nations; supports the campaign by Anthem4England and British Future; and calls on all major sporting associations for English teams and athletes to follow the example of the Commonwealth Games and the women's lacrosse team and bring forward plans to use an English anthem for future sporting events, starting with the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in England and Wales, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup.
