A Voice For All On Future Trade Deals

EDM number 630 in 2016-17, proposed by Roger Godsiff on 01/11/2016.
Categorised under the topic of International trade.

That this House congratulates the people of Wallonia in Belgium, whose regional Parliament acted in their interests by trying to block the trade deal CETA; notes that trade deals including TTIP are widely opposed across Europe by citizens who are concerned that their rights and protections are being slashed in order to increase the profits of multinational corporations; further notes that, following the UK's exit from the EU, the Government will have to negotiate a large number of bilateral trade treaties with other countries; observes that these trade deals will have a huge impact on a number of important aspects of the lives of UK people, including the provision of their public services, the prices of the products they buy and whether their Government is able to legislate for the public good without being sued by companies; strongly believes that the citizens of the UK and their representatives in local authorities and devolved administrations, as well as the UK Parliament, should have the ability to shape the UK's future trade deals rather than having them dictated to them; calls on the Government to start putting in place structures to ensure that the process for negotiating future bilateral trade deals allows citizens, local governments and devolved authorities to play a leading role in setting the priorities and the terms for the UK's trade with the world; and suggests that such structures might result in better trade deals that are fairer and more transparent.
