Situation In Rwanda

EDM number 1129 in 1993-94, proposed by Simon Hughes on 27/04/1994.

That this House is deeply concerned at the current situation in Rwanda where over 100,000 people have been brutally slaughtered in the last two weeks; questions the recent decision of the United Nations Security Council to reduce its peace-keeping presence in Rwanda from 2, 500 to just 270; believes that the Security Council should urgently increase UNAMIRs strength and mandate allowing it to protect civilians and to establish safe corridors for relief convoys and safe areas for internally displaced people and refugees; and calls on the international community to increase its financial and diplomatic support for the OAU peace process in order to bring the combatants together to agree a cease-fire, the free passage of relief supplies and the free movement of citizens seeking refuge in neighbouring countries.
