Collieries Scheduled For Closure

EDM number 1138 in 1992-93, proposed by Eric Illsley on 12/01/1993.

That this House is alarmed at continuing reports of the deterioration of conditions at the 10 collieries which are the subject of the closure announcement by the Government including reports of the closure of coal faces due to the lack of maintenance by British Coal; is concerned at the threat to these collieries through lack of maintenance work and production and fears that these collieries may be unable to restart production if reprieved by the the High Court following its decision of 21st December 1992; recalls the statements of the Prime Minister, the President of the Board of Trade, the Chairman of British Coal and others that the collieries in question would be able to restart production if closure did not go ahead following consultation; and therefore demands that action be taken immediately by British Coal and the Government to maintain these collieries and restart development and production and that a report by presented to Parliament on the condition of each colliery.
