SCOTLAND'S RESPONSE TO WATER PRIVATISATION PROPOSALS

That this House welcomes the overwhelming rejection of any proposals to remove water and sewerage services in Scotland from the protection and control of elected local councillors; notes that even the 4,800 views expressed in submissions by letter and from corporate or business organisations contained only four private companies in favour of privatisation and five in favour of franchising of water services; calls on the Secretary of State to recognise that even Conservative councils in Bearsden and Milngavie, Kincardine and Deeside and Stirling joined the 153,800 signatories who submitted petitions and postcards against privatisation or franchising; and expects that he will be guided by the good sense of the Scottish community and abandon privatisation or franchising proposals for water services in Scotland.
