That this House welcomes the decision of the International Whaling Commission meeting in Kyoto to continue a ban on commercial whaling for a further year; welcomes the clear majority support for the setting up of a special working group to establish a whale sanctuary in the Southern Ocean; strongly condemns the unilateral decision by Norway to proceed with a commercial whale hunt this year in defiance of the IWC; calls upon the Government to remind Norway that any potential member of the EC would be expected to abide by EC and international rules on whaling; and urges the Norwegian Government to reconsider its position on this matter as a matter of priority.
