Dartmoor Ponies

That this House congratulates the British Union For the Abolition of Vivisection on their recent revelation that wild Dartmoor ponies are being used in research at Glasgow University; is concerned with the seemingly repetitive nature of the particular research project in question which appears not to have required a Home Office licence; notes that Directive 86/609 specifically prohibits the use of wild animals where purpose-bred animals would suffice; is further concerned that the legislation governing animal research could in its current form lead to ex-pet animals being the subject of experimentation; and urges Her Majesty's Government to use their powers under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 to amend Schedule 2 of the Act to include all equines and to undertake a review of the manner in which this Act applies to equines.
