Fifth Anniversary Of The Fatwa Against Mr Salman Rushdie

EDM number 586 in 1993-94, proposed by Mark Fisher on 10/02/1994.

That this House condemns the fatwa issued by the Iranian Government against Mr Salman Rushdie on 14th February 1989, and its offer of bounty money, as a contravention of international law, of human rights and of freedom of expression; resolves that it holds the Government of Iran directly responsible for the safety of Mr Rushdie, his publishers and translators and others threatened by the fatwa; calls on Her Majesty's Government to redouble its efforts to persuade the Iranian Government to end the fatwa; and supports the principle of freedom of expression and the human rights of Mr Rushdie.
