Chronic Bronchitis And Emphysema Amongst Coal Miners

That this House is extremely concerned at the alarmingly high failure rate which is around 90 per cent. of all miners who have applied for a disablement assessment for chronic bronchitis and emphysema under the new regulations, which have operated since September 1993; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to amend the prescription test by reducing the qualification period from 20 years to 10 years, by sanctioning specific soft exposure x-rays for detection of dust retention, by reducing the threshold level for disability from 14 per cent. to multiples of 10 per cent. and by replacing the FEV test with a more sensitive test for detecting airways damage to the function of the lung. (Relevant registered interest declared).
