Hillfields Area Of Coventry And Wandsworth
EDM number 1404 in 1994-95, proposed by Jim Cunningham on 13/07/1995.
That this House condemns the mis-informed, ill-judged and uncalled for statements of the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Environment, Sir Paul Beresford, while visiting the Hillfields area of Coventry; is amazed that the Minister stated that Hillfields is 'disgusting' and that 'It doesn't cost much to clean after yourself', as reported in the Coventry Evening Telegraph of 13th July 1995; reminds the Minister and his colleagues that it is the unemployment, the social security cuts, the homelessness and the economic disasters of the Conservative Government, as well as his Government's refusal to give the go-ahead for ú6.2 million to go to the area from the European Urban Fund, that has made Hillfields what it is today; demands that the Minister withdraw his derogatory remarks against the decent and often struggling residents of Hillfields; urges the Minister not to insult people going about their business as an excuse for not assisting run down areas; and notes that the London borough of Wandsworth, championed by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, serves its people by closing old people's homes, and as a consequence creates unnecessary worry and hardship.
