Yorkshire Water: Outsourcing Of Sewage Treatment

That this House expresses extreme concern that the proposed contracting out of the 180 sewage treatment stations in the Yorkshire Water region could seriously damage the quality and effectiveness of the present service owing to the employment of inexperienced staff, the failure to write into the specification of the contract a minimum daily report on every treatment station the reduced ability of the Customer Service Committee to monitor the performance of private contractors, when customer complaints against a contracted out service are not listed and the potential public danger if sewage leaks are not dealt with promptly; and calls on the Secretary of State for the Environment to call a halt to such outsourcing by water companies until a full appraisal of the service implications has been carried out by OFWAT customer services committees.
