Part Time Workers

That this House notes the contribution part-time workers make to the United Kingdom economy but is concerned by evidence produced by the TUC which reveals that at least half a million part-time workers in Britain, mainly women, earn less than ú2.49 per hour; is also alarmed by the current legal position of such workers, in particular those earning less than the national insurance threshold, at present ú57 per week, who currently lose out from all contributory benefits, including state pension; applauds the decision of the Daily Mirror newspaper to jointly produce and distribute a leaflet with the TUC to help ensure part-timers are aware of their new employment rights gained in February as a result of a House of Lords judgement; calls for a new deal for the nation's part-time workers; and asks Her Majesty's Government to introduce legislation at an early date to make employers treat such employees on an equal basis.
