Human Rights In Nigeria

EDM number 889 in 1994-95, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 23/03/1995.

That this House is appalled by the continuing violations of human rights in Nigeria; notes that, despite the protestations of this House and the governments of other European countries and the United States, Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the widely acclaimed free and fair election in June 1993, still remains in gaol unable to receive the crucial medical assistance he needs, that Ken Saro-Wiwa, the writer and leader of the Ogoni people still remains in prison, and that General Olusegun Obasango and Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, both of whom are the leaders of the only military regime in Nigeria that fulfilled its promise of returning the country back to civilian rule in 1979, have been recently arrested; and calls on the Government of Nigeria to reverse these trends and to move rapidly to restore Nigeria to a civil democracy, to which all Nigerians, including the present regime, have pledged their support.
