Section 11 Funding

That this House is deeply concerned that the Government has made no announcement on the continuation of Section 11; notes that many current projects funded under Section 11 expire in March 1997 but is convinced that the needs which these projects are designed to meet will continue; notes that local authorities have been left in a state of uncertainty for many months, and need to know as a matter of urgency what the Government's intentions are, to allow them to plan for the year commencing 1st April 1997; urges the Government in view of its stated intention to improve literacy rates to recognise the demand for the teaching of English as a second language; and asks that the Government make a statement confirming that bids will be invited immediately for new projects under Section 11 to commence in April 1997.
