Irish Ethnicity Question In Census Field Trials
EDM number 208 in 1996-97, proposed by Kevin McNamara on 18/11/1996.
That this House, understanding the need for adequate data for effective social and economic planning within Great Britain, noting that the Commission for Racial Equality has urged all statutory and non-statutory bodies to include an Irish category in all employment monitoring and other returns, and that the Office of National Statistics in its own published evidence points to significant concerns for the health of the Irish community in Great Britain and its children amongst other matters, urges upon the Office of National Statistics to accept the call of the Federation of Irish Societies and other representatives of Irish organisations in Great Britain and to follow the example of those local authorities, housing associations and other bodies which include an Irish category within the ethnic classifications and to have such a classification in the forthcoming field tests for the next census and ultimately for the census of 2001.
