Staffordshire Regiment

EDM number 53 in 1997-98, proposed by Michael Fabricant on 02/06/1997.

That this House, recognises that the Staffordshire Regiment is one of just two remaining county regiments to have survived in the British Army; acknowledges that since its formation at the King's Head in Lichfield in 1705 it has given honourable service in the Caribbean, the American War of Independence, China, the Crimea, India, South Africa, the Nile, France and Mesopotamia in the Great War, Burma and Western Europe in the Second World War, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, Bosnia and elsewhere over nearly 300 years; understands that the regiment today has an excellent record in its ability to recruit volunteers and to maintain peace-keeping as well as offensive capabilities; and urges Her Majesty's Government to allow the Regiment of Staffordshire to continue to serve the nation without merger or threat of dissolution for the next 300 years.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
