Conduct Of Lord Alton Of Liverpool And The Doctor Assisted Dying Bill

EDM number 596 in 1997-98, proposed by Joseph Ashton on 16/12/1997.

That this House notes that when the honourable Member for Bassetlaw announced his Ten Minute Rule Bill, Doctor Assisted Dying, it was immediately wrongly denounced as euthanasia by Cardinal Hume, that Lord Alton of Liverpool advised readers of the Catholic Herald to ring 219 3000 to complain to their honourable Members, that the Commons switchboard and fax machines were swamped with calls and that when the honourable Member for Bassetlaw had no option but to write letters to all honourable Members explaining that his bill was not euthanasia, several opposing honourable Members reported him to the Serjeant at Arms for the misuse of commons envelopes and stationery and demanded that he pay for the items used.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
