Standards Of Literacy

EDM number 669 in 1997-98, proposed by Jackie Lawrence on 21/01/1998.

That this House welcomes the Government's efforts to raise standards of literacy in Britain's schools; and further welcomes initiatives such as the W.H. Smith Group plc's 'Ready Steady Read' scheme which supports these aims in providing half a million free reading books worth ú1.5 million to 400 primary schools over the next five years, thereby benefiting 75,000 children.
