EDM number 427 in 1998-99, proposed by Nigel Jones on 15/03/1999.

That this House applauds the residents, businesses and Borough Council of Cheltenham for their positive approach to attracting tourists, exemplified by the hugely successful Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival at Prestbury Park Racecourse (16th to 18th March) and the Murphy's meeting in the autumn; notes the recent successful Cheltenham Folk Festival (5th to 7th February); anticipates with relish further attractions including the International Jazz Festival (8th to 11th April), the International Festival of Music (3rd to 18th July), the County Cricket Festival in July, the 50th Cheltenham Literature Festival (8th to 24th October), and the RAC Network Q Rally of Great Britain (20th to 23rd November); appreciates the varied range of high quality hotels, guest houses, restaurants, theatres and other leisure activities of the town including the skilful play of Cheltenham Town Football Club, current holders of the FA Umberto Trophy; remembers fondly those who have contributed so much to the town's history including the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, the scientist Edward Jenner, the actor Sir Ralph Richardson, the Antarctic explorer Edward Wilson, the composer Gustav Holst, and the rock legend Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones; and urges those who have not yet sampled the delights of Cheltenham to visit and enjoy the many varied attractions in one of England's finest towns nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds in glorious Gloucestershire.
