East London Line

EDM number 816 in 1998-99, proposed by Oona King on 13/07/1999.

That this House congratulates the Deputy Prime Minister for allowing London Transport to develop the business case and draft powers for proposed southern extensions of London Underground's East London Line, and to design the links with Railtrack lines in South London, so that the case for linking the Underground with more of South London can be reviewed by the Government in spring 1999; welcomes the opportunity that this creates for a Transport and Works Act Order inquiry; recognises that together with the existing powers for an East London Line northern extension to the City, Dalston and Islington, there is a strategic opportunity for London to create a new transport corridor supporting regeneration, social inclusion, economic development, additional rail capacity and transport integration at far less cost than an entirely new railway, and more quickly; and calls on the Government, Transport for London and the new Mayor for London when elected, to agree to fund this cross-London link at the earliest date.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
