WANDSWORTH'S SCHOOL ADMISSIONS POLICY
EDM number 995 in 1998-99, proposed by Tom Cox on 08/11/1999.
That this House deplores the action of the Tory-controlled council in the London Borough of Wandsworth in seeking to challenge in the High Court the right of local parents to seek to refer to an independent adjudicator, as incorporated in the Labour Government's School Standards and Framework Act 1998, the admission of their children to local Wandsworth schools, namely Graveney, Burntwood and Ernest Bevin; notes that under successive Tory Governments from 1979 to 1997, they refused to listen to or to meet local parents who had sought changes to the then admissions policy that was being followed; and fully supports the actions of the present Government which has listened to parents and introduced a school admissions policy in keeping with the wishes of Wandsworth's parents.
