ISLINGTON'S VOLUNTARY SECTOR

EDM number 873 in 1999-00, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 20/06/2000.

That this House values the contribution of the voluntary sector in helping to develop a harmonious and cohesive society; deplores the cuts now being threatened to Islington's voluntary sector by the Liberal Democrat administration which is attempting to save ú1.4 million by cuts to community centres, ethnic organisations, advice agencies, luncheon clubs, youth facilities and pensioners' clubs; believes that these cuts will increase social exclusion and will result in huge losses to the borough because without core funding community centres will not be eligible for other financial support; and accordingly calls on the council to halt the programme of cuts and on the Government's social exclusion unit to report on the impact of the voluntary sector on community life.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
