The Legislative Process

EDM number 967 in 1999-00, proposed by Paul Flynn on 12/07/2000.

That this House notes the perils of legislating in haste; recalls the Terrorism and Conspiracy Act 1998 and the Public Entertainment Licences (Drug Misuse) Act 1998, on which no action has been taken; believes that these, and the Dangerous Dogs Act, were enacted principally to satisfy the demands of tabloid newspapers; and notes other examples of ineffective legislation, including certain schemes in the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, camping restrictions in the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1991, citizen's rights in the Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act 1992, the ban on importing comics in the Childrens and Young Persons Act 1955, unit fines in the Criminal Justice Act 1992 which were abolished in 1993, sections of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1987, tendering procedures in the Local Government Act 1992, the control of sex shops in the Indecent Displays (Control) Act 1981, the Weeds Act 1959, the Easter Act 1928, the Foreign Prison-made Goods Act 1897 and the Slander of Women Act 1891.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
