Us National Missile Defence System
EDM number 308 in 2000-01, proposed by Ann Cryer on 08/02/2001.
That this House notes with grave concern the commitment by the new US administration to the early deployment of a national missile defence system; deeply regrets their statements that they are prepared to negotiate the amendment of, or unilaterally withdraw from, the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia in order to make sure they have an adequate and effective and reliable theatre-based anti-ballistic missile system; deplores the announcement by the Leader of the Opposition that a Conservative Government would support the deployment of national missile defence; fears that these moves would lead to a renewed nuclear arms race; which will have dire implications for international peace and security; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to recognise their obligation under Article VI of the 2000 non-proliferation treaty agreement, which commits them to give an unequivocal undertaking to accomplish the total elimination of their nuclear arsenals leading to a global nuclear disarmament.
