Voucher System For Asylum Seekers
EDM number 575 in 2000-01, proposed by Iain Coleman on 09/04/2001.
That this House notes that the voucher system for asylum seekers has now been in operation for 12 months; further notes, and agrees with, the comments of the President of the TUC regarding the inefficient and wasteful bureaucracy of the system and the very regretable stigmatising and degrading aspects of the system; therefore calls upon the Government to abandon the system without delay in order to return to a system of benefit entitlement for asylum seekers; and unreservedly condemns the brutal, expensive and unworkable policy of the Conservative Opposition to detain compulsorily all new asylum seekers, including women and children.
