Council Tax Rises In Seaside Resort Unitary Authorities

EDM number 1093 in 2001-02, proposed by Adrian Sanders on 10/04/2002.

That this House notes that out of the 12 highest unitary authority council tax rises this year, half were large seaside resorts and that the above average rises in Blackpool, Brighton, Bournemouth, Isle of Wight, Torbay and Poole were mostly the consequence of common demographic characteristics that continue to increase the demand for services, especially social services, and that central government grant regimes fail to adequately compensate for these factors; and therefore calls on Her Majesty's Government to recognise the unmet needs of our larger victorian seaside resorts and treat them as a distinct group for the purposes of targeted funding.
