`INJUSTICE'

EDM number 391 in 2001-02, proposed by Simon Thomas on 08/11/2001.

That this House congratulates Ken Faro on his film 'Injustice' about the struggle for justice by the families that have died in police custody; notes the cases of Shiji Lapite, Brian Douglas and Ibrahim Sey, which are highlighted in the film, who died in the mid-nineties from injuries sustained while they were being arrested by Metropolitan Police officers; notes that in the case of Lapite the jury at inquest came to an unanimous verdict of unlawful killing and that in the case of Sey the inquest jury were so appalled that they insisted on adding manslaughter to the verdict of unlawful killing; notes with concern that the Crown Prosecution Service has decided not to proceed with either of these cases; notes that there were threats of legal action against cinemas in order to stop the film being shown due to individual police officers being named; notes that between 1969 and 1999 there have been 1,000 deaths in police custody, prisons and secure psychiatric hospital but there has been no successful prosecution of an officer of the law; calls for an inquiry into deaths which occur in police custody; and calls for the film to be shown publicly.
