CHELMSFORD'S BID FOR CITY STATUS TO COMMEMORATE HM THE QUEEN'S GOLDEN JUBILEE

EDM number 79 in 2001-02, proposed by Simon Burns on 04/07/2001.

That this House welcomes the decision that at least one town should be awarded the title of city to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen's Golden Jubilee; believes that this should be bestowed on Chelmsford, the county town of the county of Essex, the site of the cathedral for the diocese of Chelmsford, the administrative centre for Essex County Council and Chelmsford Borough Council and the main site of the Anglia Polytechnic/University; furthermore believes that it is most unusual that the county of Essex does not have one single city within its borders; and believes when this is rectified it is most appropriate to do so by bestowing city status on Chelmsford.
