LIVERPOOL'S SELECTION AS EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE IN 2008

That this House welcomes Liverpool's selection as the European Capital of Culture in 2008; thanks the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and her selection team led by Sir Jeremy Issacs for recognising that Liverpool is a wonderful, remarkable city worthy of the title; recognises that the city has more listed buildings than any other city in the UK outside London, supports an incredibly diverse array of artistic, musical and theatrical opportunities for a diverse community, which includes people from all over the world who enrich the cultural diversity available for all to enjoy, and is proud of its sporting heritage, which includes two world famous Premiership football clubs and the internationally famous Aintree and Haydock race courses; recognises that the harbour is being considered for inclusion in the list of World Heritage sites and that the coastline is populated by sites of special scientific interest; also recognises that the city is in receipt of European Objective One funding and that becoming the European Capital of Culture 2008 will promote economic prosperity and underpin the repositioning of the city and help it to become an outstanding world class place to live and to engage in business; and congratulates the Liverpool Capital of Culture team, Liverpool City Council and the people of the North West for their support and encouragement throughout the campaign.
