Military Aid To Columbia
EDM number 1631 in 2002-03, proposed by Adam Price on 08/09/2003.
That this House notes that Colombia has been ravaged by civil war for over 40 years; further note that the rate of human suffering is considered amongst the worst in the Western hemisphere and that political murders are estimated at a level of 20 a day; further notes that human rights organisations accuse the Colombian military of colluding with right wing paramilitaries accused of human rights abuses and that left wing political activists and trade unionists are a specific target for the military backed militias; further notes that Amnesty International and other organisations have called on Western governments to desist from supplying military aid to Colombia but that since 1997 military aid to Colombia from the UK has increased; and calls on the UK Government to halt military aid until there is no evidence of collusion between the Colombian military and right wing paramilitaries.
