September 11th 1973 (No. 2)
EDM number 1669 in 2002-03, proposed by Harry Barnes on 10/09/2003.
That this House notes that 11th September is the 30th anniversary of the barbaric coup undertaken by General Pinochet against the elected government of Chile under President Salvador Allende, which led to his death when the Presidential Palace was attacked by Chilean jets and which subsequently led to the deaths of thousands of left-wing and other activists, as well as widespread torture and disappearances; notes with regret that Chilean action was assisted in this crime against humanity by US President Nixon whose administration did its utmost to make the economy scream and ferment instability and whose National Security Adviser, Henry Kissinger, notoriously said that he didn't see why the US should stand aside and see a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people; welcomes the comments by US Secretary of State Colin Powell on 20th February, that what happened with Mr Allende is not a part of American history that we're proud of; and calls upon President Bush to amplify the comments of Colin Powell and apologise for the disgraceful actions of the US in Chile in 1970 to 1973.
