Membership Of Select Committees

EDM number 1923 in 2002-03, proposed by Gordon Prentice on 13/11/2003.

That this House believes, in the light of its decision on 30th October to pay the Chairmen of some select committees an additional ú12.500 per annum in recognition of their extra responsibilities, and recalling its earlier decision to reject the proposed Committee of Nomination which would take decisions on select committee membership out of the hands of the political parties, that it would be appropriate for the means by which honourable Members are recommended by their respective Parliamentary parties to the Committee of Selection for membership of select committees to be less opaque; and urges the Leader of the House to consult with his counterparts in the other parties and lodge in the Library a memorandum setting out in detail the procedures adopted by each party, covering such matters as multiple membership of select committees and whether it is appropriate for PPSs to serve on select committees.
