Office For National Statistics And National Identity
EDM number 400 in 2003-04, proposed by Simon Thomas on 12/01/2004.
That this House welcomes the decision of the Office for National Statistics to issue guidelines to statutory organisations on ensuring that the question of Welsh, English and Scottish identity will be included in future surveys and questionnaires; notes with approval that such a question will be separate from ethnic origin, thus rightly allowing for the first time individuals to identify themselves as, for example, both Afro-Caribbean and Welsh; and believes that this decision will ensure that the next census properly acknowledges national identities in the United Kingdom.
