Competition In The Supply Of Sugar And The Honourable Member For Shrewsbury And Atcham

EDM number 1470 in 2005-06, proposed by Lynne Jones on 24/01/2006.

That this House notes concerns raised in reports from successive Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committees on the EU sugar regime about the limited competition in the sugar sector and the imbalance in the relationship between the single UK private sector monopoly processor of sugar beet, British Sugar, and the diverse grower base; is surprised that a member of the Committee, the honourable Member for Shrewsbury and Atcham, should seek to prevent Cadbury, a manufacturer in a highly competitive sector, from reducing its dependence on a monopoly supplier of one of its main raw materials; and accordingly encourages people to continue to enjoy Cadbury's chocolate whilst noting that 90 per cent. of the sugar in Cadbury's products is British.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
