Famagusta/varosha Petitions

EDM number 1272 in 2006-07, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 16/04/2007.

That this House supports the Give your town a voice petition campaign initiated by the Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos, to collect signatures from former residents of the fenced-off part of Famagusta, a military zone behind barbed wire for nearly 33 years, and signed by the leaders of both Cyprus communities; believes that Turkey is using Famagusta/Varosha as a bargaining chip rather than supporting initiatives such as the Gambari Agreement and is preventing proposals to make Famagusta a workshop of cooperation between the two communities and for economic growth, which would be a clear example of what can be done in Cyprus as a whole; and supports and draws attention to the online petition, which anyone can sign, the Global Campaign for the Return of Varosha to its lawful inhabitants that were displaced in 1974, which can be found on www.isxys.org/famagusta/.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
