Additional Cost Allowances For Married And Co-Habiting Hon. Members

EDM number 2323 in 2007-08, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 22/10/2008.
Categorised under the topics of House of Commons and Members of Parliament.

That this House commends the recommendation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards that in future cases the House should `consider abating members' individual additional costs allowances where, for any reason, they share accommodation for which they make claims against that allowance'; believes that hon. Members who are married or live together only require one second home and so should not receive two allowances; believes that allowing such hon. Members to claim two allowances is wrong and open to abuse; and urges that the recommendation made by the Parliamentary Commissioner be adapted into rules and regulations governing the allowances and expenses system for hon. Members as soon as possible.
