Election Of Andros Kyprianou

EDM number 567 in 2008-09, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 26/01/2009.
Categorised under the topics of Europe and International politics and government.

That this House welcomes the election of Andros Kyprianou as the fifth General Secretary and leader of AKEL, the governing party in the Republic of Cyprus, succeeding President Demetris Christofias after the latter stood down to concentrate on the settlement talks with Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Talat; recalls Andros Kyprianou briefing delegations of British politicians in Cyprus, in London and at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, particularly on international relations; remembers his talks in London often on platforms alongside Turkish Cypriots, and specifically his talks in the House on the day dedicated to Missaouli and Kavazogilou, the two members of AKEL who were shot together for their joint work for Cyprus, at the Wood Green Cypriot Centre, with Izzet Izcan and representing AKEL at his good friend Ozker Ozgur's memorial; and notes his statement that he hopes to work not only for AKEL to maintain its leading role in the Republic of Cyprus but to be a true servant of the people of Cyprus.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
