Middlesbrough's Bid For City Status

EDM number 1695 in 2010-12, proposed by Tom Blenkinsop on 31/03/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Local government.

That this House supports Middlesbrough's campaign for city status; believes that such a move would help Middlesbrough continue to punch above its weight and build on the progress that has been made in recent years on the provision of housing, regeneration and transport; further believes it would give Middlesbrough the parity it deserves with other cities of the North East; further believes that its proud steel and chemical industries should be taken note of when the decision is being considered, as well as Middlesbrough's most famous son Captain James Cook and the outstanding hospital named after him, the Transporter Bridge, Middlesbrough Football Club, the delicious local delicacy the parmo, the many great local pubs and the great local media including the leading regional tabloid, the Evening Gazette; and further believes that city status is deserved because of Middlesbrough's harmonious and richly diverse racial and cultural communities.

This motion has been signed by a total of 6 MPs.
