Gilden Way Development In Harlow

That this House is concerned by the Secretary of State's granting of planning permission for 1,200 new homes on green farmland near to Old Harlow, known as the Gilden Way development; notes that this was a quasi-judicial decision; concludes however that that decision flies against the localism agenda, as every local residents' association, councillors of all parties on the district council, the civic society and almost every other relevant Harlow group was vehemently opposed to the development and had expressed serious concerns about a lack of popular support, adequate consultation or any plans for necessary infrastructure; further notes that the basis for upholding the planning application was in essence a hangover from the previous Government's controversial regional spatial strategies, which Parliament had clearly expressed a will to see abolished; and therefore calls on the Government to take urgent action to accelerate local powers so that residents in Old Harlow can have a meaningful say over the future development of where they live.
