EDM number 634 in 2015-16, proposed by Catherine McKinnell on 02/11/2015.
Categorised under the topic of Aviation.

That this House commends Newcastle International Airport on its 80th anniversary; notes that Newcastle Airport opened on 26 July 1935 and is now the largest airport in the North East of England and the 10th largest in the UK in 2014; recognises that it was requisitioned as an auxiliary wartime base for the RAF during the Second World War; further notes that the airport was granted Category B status in 1978 which meant it became a regional international airport, reaching the milestone of one million passengers in 1980; notes that passenger numbers reached three million per year by 2000, with a major £27 million terminal extension opened in October 2000; notes that Newcastle International Airport Ltd is a public-private partnership between AMP Capital Investors Ltd and seven local authorities, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland; further recognises that the airport has secured game-changing new air services in recent years, including Emirates to Dubai and the first transatlantic service to New York by United Airlines; and recognises that the Newcastle International Airport is of critical importance to the economy of the North East of England, supporting 3,400 jobs on site and 7,800 jobs in total, as well as directly contributing £403 million to regional GVA.
