Nutrition Society 75th Anniversary

EDM number 751 in 2016-17, proposed by Stephen Metcalfe on 30/11/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Food and Science.

That this House congratulates the Nutrition Society and commemorates the 75th anniversary of its formation in 1941; recalls that by 1930 nutrition was fully recognised as a science in its own right although at the time no formal learned society existed for the sharing and development of the science; notes that a government Advisory Committee on Nutrition was set up in 1935, together with a Market Supply Committee; further notes that by 1939 the nutritional state of the nation was of immediate concern and that the urgency of war galvanised various interested people into action; records that informal meetings began in 1940 to bring together people studying different aspects of the same problem in medical research; recognises that the assessment of the nutritional value of human foods, and those engaged in the production and analysis of animal feeding stuffs, was beneficial to the nation; notes that a preliminary meeting at the Athenaeum Club in London on 11 June 1941 was followed by a conference at the Royal Institution in London on 23 July 1941, attended by 28 eminent people from the field of nutrition, at which the Nutrition Society was formed; applauds the Society's object to advance the scientific study of nutrition and its application to the maintenance of human and animal health; and notes that the Nutrition Society now has 2,500 members globally and is the largest such learned society in the world for the science of nutrition.
