Charge On Disposable Coffee Cups

EDM number 533 in 2017-19, proposed by Timothy Farron on 14/11/2017.
Categorised under the topic of Waste management.

That this House regrets that currently 2.5 billion disposable cups are thrown away every year in the UK, which equates to around seven million every day; notes that fewer than one in 400 of these cups are recycled; expresses serious concern at the volume of disposed cups which litter our streets and end up in our rivers and seas;·recognises the success of the charge on plastic bags introduced in 2015, which raised at least £29.2 million in England alone during the first six months, and which has seen an 85 per cent reduction in plastic bag use; further notes that both the French and Irish parliaments have recently passed legislation to ban single-use coffee cups; welcomes the change.org petition which currently has over 97,000 signatures calling for a five pence charge to be introduced on disposable coffee cups in the UK; and calls on the Government to introduce such a charge, with the money raised to be donated to environmental causes.
