Rebel Cricket Tour Of South Africa (No.2)

That this House deplores the violent attacks by the South African police against those protesting peacefully against the English rebel cricket tour of South Africa; recalls that the Commonwealth Statement on apartheid in sport (the Gleneagles Agreement) states that it is 'the urgent duty of each of their Governments vigorously to combat the evil of apartheid by witholding any form of support for, and by taking every practical step to discourage contact or competition by their nationals with sporting organisations, teams or sportsmen, from South Africa', that the Commonwealth heads of Government further 'recognised that the effective fulfilment of their commitments was essential to the harmonious development of Commonwealth sport hereafter', and that they 'acknowledged also that the full realisation of their objectives involved the understanding, support and active participation of the nationals of their countries and of their national sporting organisations and authorities'; therefore regrets that the Prime Minister inadvertently misled the House of Commons on Tuesday 23rd January by stating on the rebel cricketers 'their going is not contrary to the Gleneagles Agreement because it is a voluntary agreement'; therefore appeals to the rebel cricket tourists to immediately terminate their tour and return to Britain; and calls upon the Prime Minister to re-affirm Government support for the Commonwealth Gleneagles Agreement, in its entirety and to call upon the cricketers to return home immediately.
