Racial Equality In The Armed Forces
EDM number 1166 in 1997-98, proposed by Jim Murphy on 30/03/1998.
That this House welcomes the recent progress made by Britain's armed forces in promoting equal opportunities for Britain's ethnic minorities, in particular the Commission for Racial Equality's decision to lift the threat of a non-discrimination notice against the Ministry of Defence, in recognition of the major improvements in policies and practice implemente d by the Services, especially the Household Cavalry, over the past two years; notes, however, that ethnic minorities still only account for 1.04 per cent. of Britain's armed forces; and urges further action, in partnership with the Commission for Racial Equality to increase their representation while at the same time rooting out racism in all three services.
