Rwanda Executions

EDM number 1234 in 1997-98, proposed by Gerry Steinberg on 22/04/1998.

That this House is horrified that the Rwandan government has announced that they will execute by firing squad on Friday 24th April 33 prisoners convicted of genocide in Kigali; believes that, aside from the general rejection of the death penalty on human rights grounds, a public execution is particularly disgusting, and that as there are doubts about the fairness of trials for genocide in Rwanda and until the names are published, it is not possible to discover how fair the trials of these 33 were; and, since the Rwandan government's statement about the proposed method of execution issued last May did not include public execution, consequently calls for clemency by President Bizimungu.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
