Kosova (No. 2)
EDM number 1418 in 1997-98, proposed by John Austin on 10/06/1998.
That this House condemns unreservedly recent Serbian violence against the civilian population of Kosova; fully supports the attempts of President Rugova to achieve a peaceful resolution of the conflict; recognises that the intransigence of Slobodan Milosevic and attempts at ethnic cleansing have resulted in increasing support for the Kosova Liberation Army which makes a peaceful conclusion, as advocated by President Rugova, more difficult to achieve; believes that firm action is required by the international community but recognises that the stationing of NATO forces along the Albanian or Macedonian border may adversely affect the Albanian majority in Kosova by cutting off both their route of refuge and supplies; recalls that appeasement of the Serbs led to massive slaughter and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and that only the threat of, and actual use of military force had any impact on the behaviour of the Belgrade regime; and calls on the international community to take whatever action is necessary, including the use of military force, to protect the people of Kosova and defend their right to self-determination.
