Private Rail Operators And The Network Card

EDM number 162 in 1997-98, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 24/06/1997.

That this House protests at the decision of the Association of Train Operating Companies (representing the speculators now owning the franchised rail services) to increase the cost of the London South East network card by nearly 50 per cent. whilst also limiting its use from London terminals and Clapham Junction; considers it transparent that their intention is to make the concession so unattractive to customers that it is slowly killed-off; believes this is designed to increase their profits whilst its consequences will be to diminish further the use of public transport, reduce revenue for the Underground, increase congestion and hit the poorest hardest; considers that the 430,000 travellers who use this concession each year will be reminded of yet another costly legacy of the last Conservative government; and is resolved to support any action by the new Labour administration designed to frustrate this wholly unwarranted action by the greedy franchise operators.

This motion has been signed by a total of 45 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
