British Deaths In East Timor

EDM number 1673 in 1997-98, proposed by Ann Clwyd on 20/10/1998.

That this House calls for an independent public inquiry with powers to call witnesses and to examine all documents relating to the deaths of British-born television newsmen Malcolm Rennie and Brian Peters in East Timor 23 years ago; notes the recent major investigations into these deaths by the Australian Section of the International Commission of Jurists and the Sydney Morning Herald, which revealed that the Australian Government was briefed, in advance, that Indonesian forces would launch a massive attack on East Timor on 16th October 1975; regrets that successive British governments have failed to examine the facts; and calls for justice for the newsmen's families and the people of East Timor who continue to be the victims of an illegal and genocidal occupation.

This motion has been signed by a total of 59 MPs.
