Rape Crisis In Glasgow

EDM number 648 in 1997-98, proposed by James Wallace on 15/01/1998.

That this House is appalled by the news that Rape Crisis in Glasgow is under threat of closure due to underfunding; recognises that it offers a unique and essential service in an area covering half of Scotland's population; strongly supports the campaign to save Rape Crisis in Glasgow, spearheaded by the Big Issue, and argues that the responsibility for the funding of the service lies not only with the councils involved but with central government as the paymaster of local authorities; believes that the closure of Rape Crisis would be to the shame of Scotland's government at all levels; calls on central and local government to secure adequate funding for the service to continue at its present level; further calls on the Secretary of State to intervene, if necessary, to ensure that Rape Crisis centres in Scotland are properly funded by local authorities without resort to cuts in other areas; and urges him in the light of this funding crisis to give due consideration to increasing local authority funding to an adequate level.
